The House The Chamberlain

The office of the Chamberlain.

The Chamberlain is the door through which all correspondence with the house must pass. He is, presently, Master Aurel; he has held the office since MMXIX.

Office — Old BelgraviaBy Audience Only

The Chamberlain receives all correspondence on behalf of the house. He determines, upon his reading and upon his judgement, which letters are placed before the head of house and which are answered, filed, or returned.

The office is held for life, or until laid down. The Chamberlain serves no other house, sits upon no other board, and accepts no fee from any source other than the Group itself.

The Chamberlain's hours follow the older calendar.

  • Matins to Terce — the day's correspondence is read, in the Library of Letters.
  • Terce to Sext — replies are drafted, in the Chamberlain's hand.
  • Sext to None — audiences, by prior arrangement only.
  • After None — the office is closed. Letters arriving after this hour are read on the morrow.

On feast days of the western calendar, no correspondence is read. The day is observed.

Audiences with the Chamberlain are arranged by prior letter, and only by prior letter. The petitioner shall propose three days, no fewer, in the fortnight following the writing; the Chamberlain shall confirm one, or none.

Audiences are held in the first reception room of the seat. They are not recorded; the Chamberlain takes the recollection in his own hand, after the audience, and the recollection is filed.

An audience does not, of itself, create an obligation upon the house. It creates an entry in the audience-book; the audience-book is not the ledger.
